Bullying: DeSean Jackson of the Eagles
SI.com: Michael Rosenberg: Sports can play a pivotal role in helping combat bullying
updated October 7, 2011
In this week's SI, I wrote an essay about DeSean Jackson of the Eagles. In it, I neglected to mention the enormous human tragedy of the Eagles losing three football games and instead focused on something else: Jackson's crusade against bullying.

Judge Edwards, St. Louis: Innovative Concept Academy
Judge Edwards and his Innovative Concept Academy were featured in the Sept. 22 issue of People Magazine.
In 2009, after watching a string of teen offenders come through his courtroom, Judge Edwards took action. Along with 45 community partners, he took over an abandoned school and opened the Academy. Providing strict discipline, counseling and programs like chess, music and creative writing, and mandatory after-school activities, the center has changed the lives of many young people, giving them the opportunity to graduate from high school and lead successful lives.
“I am so proud of all the teachers, staff, volunteers, and most of all, the students who have made our Innovative Concept Academy a success,” said Judge Edwards. “By supporting our school St. Louis is refusing to give up on troubled juveniles and, in turn, the students are proving that hope for a better life is a universal dream.”

Community Initiatives for Safer Schools
Research reveals a child needs
to be fed nutritionally and
to feel “safe, loved, valued”
for the brain to be
most receptive to learning.
Academic success increases
with a
“Focus on Safety”.
Community Initiatives:
Conduct sessions, led by Safer Schools Team members, to explore topics to assure an environment receptive to learning:
·“Fed nutritionally”: donate financial support to Backpack-Food Program for Children to provide nutritional weekend/summer meals
·Telling is not Tattling: It is a means of protecting oneself and others. Students are often the first to know critical information “under the radar”.
·Restorative Practices: positive learning, healing, and growth for all involved
·Tutoring/Shared Time: volunteers to support academic achievement and individual attention and affirmation
How can we effectively assure the safety of our children and school personnel?
