Mon., Oct 3, 2011 Anderson Cooper: When Teen Bullying Doesn't "Get Better", the Deadly Consequences

In a daytime exclusive, Anderson speaks with Tracy and Timothy Rodemeyer, parents of 14-year-old Jamey Rodemeyer, who took his own life only weeks ago after constant bullying became too much for him to bear. Jamey’s sister, Alyssa, joins Anderson to share her loss and to perform a tribute song she... wrote for her brother. One of Jamey's classmates, who courageously admits to bullying behavior, apologizes for her wrongs and shares how Jamey's death has affected her.
Anderson introduces the Rodemeyers to the Jacobsens, another family mourning the loss of their son to suicide over bullying, in hopes that these families can support each other as they grieve. Anderson also speaks with a bullying survivor, Emily Carey and her mother, Carla, about how she persevered and ultimately overcame the emotional distress.

Plus, Dr. Dorothy Espelage provides information on what parents and the community can do to help prevent bullying, and how you can tell if something is going on with a child.

If you see something, say something:

State Trooper George H Murphy Jr. says kids need to speak up when they notice something out of the ordinary.

"Studies show up to 20,000 children and teenagers die each year from bullying and that's mostly from suicides," Trooper Murphy said.
A number that can decrease if students just realize the difference they can make.
"We really need the kids to think of it differently, and to get behind this problem," he said. "As adults, we can work to diminish it, but the students can stop it, by interacting and taking action against bullying."

Colorado lawmakers are taking on bullying

Colorado lawmakers are taking on bullying in an effort to promote a safe and secure learning environment in the state’s schools. (3-10-2011)
A bill by Democratic Representative Sue Schaffer of Wheat Ridge has passed out of the House Education Committee. House Bill 1254 redefines bullying to include electronic forms abuse. It’s something that U.S. Secretary of Education Arnie Duncan says is a growing trend.
“This is something whether its primary grades or higher education – we’re seeing some just absolute tragic, tragic outcomes due to a variety of different forms of bullying including cyber bullying,” says Duncan.
The Education Secretary made his comments during a White House conference on bullying hosted by President and First Lady Michelle Obama today. About 150 students, parents and teachers are sharing their experiences as well as what schools and communities are doing about bullying.
Nearly 30 organizations including the American Federation of Teachers as well as various gay and women’s rights groups are backing the Colorado legislation.

Safer Schools: Community Initiatives

Research reveals a child needs
to be fed nutritionally and
to feel “safe, loved, valued”
for the brain to be
most receptive to learning.

Academic success increases
with a
“Focus on Safety”.

Community Initiatives
Conduct sessions, led by Safer Schools Team members, to explore topics to assure an environment receptive to learning:
·        “Fed nutritionally”:  donate financial support to Backpack-Food Program for Children to provide nutritional weekend/summer meals
·        Telling is not Tattling:  It is a means of protecting oneself and others.  Students are often the first to know critical information “under the radar”.
·        Restorative Practices: positive learning, healing, and growth for all involved
·        Tutoring/Shared Time:  volunteers to support academic achievement and individual attention and affirmation
We must unite as a community to develop Proactive Safer Schools and ask,
“How can we effectively work to assure the safety of our children and school personnel?”
It will take all of us working together to make School Safety a reality.
