Olweus Bully Prevention Program (peruse videos of students & staff)

It was in 1999, in the wake of the Columbine massacre in Colorado in which 12 students and a teacher were killed, that the US Department of Justice selected the Olweus Bully Prevention Program as a model for their national violence prevention scheme. Since then the Olweus Program has been used in some 8000 US schools. It is also being used in Canada, the UK, Iceland, Germany and Ukraine.

In Norway the program has been shown to reduce bullying up to 50% and produce marked reductions in reports of vandalism, fighting, theft, and truancy.

Olweus Bullying Prevention Program

It was in 1999, in the wake of the Columbine massacre in Colorado in which 12 students and a teacher were killed, that the US Department of Justice selected the Olweus Bully Prevention Program as a model for their national violence prevention scheme. Since then the Olweus Program has been used in some 8000 US schools. It is also being used in Canada, the UK, Iceland, Germany and Ukraine.

In Norway the program has been shown to reduce bullying up to 50% and produce marked reductions in reports of vandalism, fighting, theft, and truancy.

Some of Olweus most notable success stories in the USA include three elementary schools in California that reported a 21% decrease in bullying after just one year. In Arizona several schools recorded a reduction of more than a quarter. The latest school to adopt Olweus is Great Neck Middle School in Virginia Beach, VA.

A good anti bullying program is essential for prevention of bullying, harassment and violence in the student population. Some Programs have 5-year studies proving their success. The Olweus Bullying Prevention Program, as an example, has a record of accomplishment for cutting bullying by 50 percent.

The Olweus Bullying Prevention Program was first developed in Norway after a number of Norway students died from suicide after being bullied. (Developed by Dan Olweus PhD – Book: Bullying at School)

"The School Family builds connection between families and schools, teachers and teachers, teachers and students, and students and students to ensure the optimal development of all.

These connections provide the three essential ingredients for school success:

* A willingness to learn    * Impulse control    *  Attention"

~ Brandon Fernandez, teenager who founded EXPRESSIONS: a program designed to teach young children how to express themselves through poetry and photography:
We never have to hold our feelings inside. Whether we express ourselves through speech, poetry, or photography, every one of us has a voice with something of value to say. Now, we can be heard.

Community Initiatives for Safer Schools

Research reveals a child needs
to be fed nutritionally and
to feel “safe, loved, valued”
for the brain to be
most receptive to learning.

Academic success increases
with a
“Focus on Safety”.

Community Initiatives:

Conduct sessions, led by Safer Schools Team members, to explore topics to assure an environment receptive to learning:

·“Fed nutritionally”: donate financial support to Backpack-Food Program for Children to provide nutritional weekend/summer meals

·Telling is not Tattling: It is a means of protecting oneself and others. Students are often the first to know critical information “under the radar”.

·Restorative Practices: positive learning, healing, and growth for all involved
(see "Safer Schools" website page: "Restorative Practices...")

·Tutoring/Shared Time: volunteers to support academic achievement and individual attention and affirmation

We must unite as a community to develop Safer Schools and ask:

“How can we effectively work to assure the safety of our children and school personnel?”

Elected officials state: "Nowhere else in our society, in our businesses and community, would we tolerate actions considered misdemeanors and felonies. Why in our schools?"

Law enforcement leader responded, "You are singing music to my ears" and connected "Safer Schools" Team members to community leaders and other law enforcement personnel.

Legislators and citizens encourage Safer Schools Team to expand the "Safer Schools" Program state-wide/nation-wide.
