Child raising tip from a school superintendent

Trying a strategy similar to one used at school where students earn Super Student Designation:  Wife was at practice and son was acting up - he's 1 - what do you expect? I moved his clip to Warning and went to the other room. When I returned he had ripped the Warning plate off the wall, threw it on the floor and went back to chewing on a colored pencil.
Touché my son....Touché.

Powerful beyond measure

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure...it is our light NOT our darkness that most frightens us. For as we let our own light shine we unconsciously let others do the same. Don't allow fear to stand in the way of your dreams.

"When our lives are difficult, we sometimes feel like life will never change. This, in turn, makes it harder for us to take the steps that might create the change we want. When your life is full of ups and downs, remember to keep your eye on your goal, and the desires of your heart. You will get through it."   Doug Westmoreland

"Make a Difference" (video)

Encouragement, Inspiration & Empowerment

Compassion is the one thing that can transform any situation in literally 30 seconds or less.

What a little third grader says to his teacher at Christmas time instantly bypasses the head and goes straight to the heart of any issue, no matter what.

Mandela tribute: 3:10 min. video

Beautiful tribute to Nelson Mandela: a flash mob song in a South African Woolworths
Woolworths teamed up with the Soweto Gospel Choir, who posed as shoppers and store workers at the Parkview store in Johannesburg.
The choir then began an "impromtu" rendition of Asimbonanga [We have not seen him], singing:

Asimbonanga [we have not seen him]
Asimbonang' uMandela thina [we have not seen Mandela]
Laph'ekhona [in the place where he is]
Laph'ehleli khona [in the place where he is kept]

Asimbonanga
Asimbonang 'umfowethu thina [we have not seen our brother]
Laph'ekhona [in the place where he is]
Laph'wafela khona [in the place where he died]
Sithi: Hey, wena [We say: hey, you]
Hey, wena nawe [Hey, you and you]
Siyofika nini la' siyakhona [when will we arrive at our destination]

The song was written during Mandela's incarceration as a call for his freedom.

How to talk to our children about the Arapahoe HS shooting

“Pray for the innocent children & others...our precious brothers & sisters affected by the Arapahoe HS shooting.  Wrap your arms around these families, and give them strength as they & we mourn this terrible tragedy.”

"Hug your loved ones, share kindness & respect to fellow humanity. Cherish shared moments and time...which are precious, fragile, fleeting."

"When the elderly die, the past dies; when children die, the future dies."

Following was shared after Connecticut shooting:

"We have assembled a brief listing of excellent resources you can use to help in your efforts to talk with you and families about the shooting.  Special thank to the following people for rallying quickly and consulting with expert to identify a few key resource.  (There are a multitude of resources available but we think at this point in time, less is more.)

Our gratitude to Alfredo Aguirre, Director of Mental Health Services, San Diego County & Network Advisory Council Member, Wayne Lindstrom, President & CEO, Mental Health America, and Robert Abramovitz, Co-Director National Center for Social Work, Trauma Education and Workforce Development, Hunter College."

Change the World (video)

The power each of us has to make a difference in this world begins
when each of us believes that we can make a difference.

Everything begins with changing ourselves FIRST.

Eleanor Roosevelt: "It is not fair to ask of others,
what you are unwilling to do yourself"

Today's video captures the essence of Eleanor's words.  Enjoy!

Sir Nicholas Winton rescued over 600 Jewish Kids from Nazi Camps (video)

Right before WWII, Sir Nicholas Winton organized the rescue of hundreds of Jewish Czechoslovakian children destined for the Nazi death camps. Forty years later, those children have gathered to honor the man who saved their lives.

What a beautiful moment. Humanitarian Nicholas Winton doesn't know that a 1988 TV audience has been pre-screened. When the host asks if anyone in the audience is alive because of him, every single person stands up.

By the way, he is still alive, at age 104.

M, Dec. 2; 5:15-6:30pm; Restorative Justice Practices/Community Accountability Process (C.A.P.)

Have you or someone you know ever been harmed by another?
What is the process to involve participants to “repair the harm”?

Restorative Justice Practices/Community Accountability Process (C.A.P.)
Monday, December 2, 2013;   5:15-6:30pm
Site: NGFM: see below

Invitation to 4th-5th gd./MS/HS/College Students/Adults
This program can benefit people of all ages and all environments thru deep questions:
-Who has been hurt?
-What are their needs?
-Who has the obligation to address the needs, to put right the harms, to restore relationships?

Sandy Bowles is the Director of Student Judicial Affairs at Guilford College and has overseen the development and implementation of restorative justice processes through the judicial system currently in place. Prominent in the process is a modified restorative conference called C.A.P. (Community Accountability Process). Through this facilitated, scripted process, faculty, staff, students and alumni join this process to both challenge and support students who are in violation of the Student Code of Conduct.
Steve Moran is the Director of Student Leadership and Engagement at Guilford and has partnered with Sandy as one of the facilitators of CAP hearings.
Sandy and Steve will be asking for volunteers to join with them in demonstrating an abbreviated version of the C.A.P. process.
